I just had my mind blown by a piece of investigative journalism from Australia. The story explores the relationship between photoshopped, soft core photographic depictions of women’s vulvas and the increasing popularity of labiaplasty — a surgery that modifies or “improves” the vulva by trimming the labia minora or inner lips.

In real life, no two vulvas look exactly alike. But in the pages of Australian soft core magazines, every woman appears to have the same sort of genitals — firm, symmetrical outer lips with a single crease in the middle, with clitoral hood and inner lips hidden neatly inside. All the models’ vulvas look alike because they’ve been photoshopped that way, “healed to a single crease” to meet legal publishing guidelines which only allow “discreet genital detail.”

It’s one thing for magazines to only hire and photograph models whose body type and grooming fit into a specific definition of “prettiness.” It’s another altogether for Australian Classification Laws to put all but one type of vulva on notice. This sort of photoshopped censorship of the human body goes way beyond slimming celebrities down on the cover of Glamour. Entire body parts are getting smoothed away and clipped off to comply with obscenity regulations, and it could be warping people’s sense of how human bodies look.
