Durex’s less than sexy new ad campaign

I was browsing around the internet looking for interesting sex-related tidbits, when I came across this post about Durex’s new ad campaign on the Sexist.  If the people in these ads are made of the thoughts that construct their bodies, I have to say this is some of the weirdest, least sexy advertising I’ve seen in a while.  I haven’t been to marketing school, but I’m pretty willing to guess that no one suggests you use the phrase “fatal error” repeatedly to sell your product.  One of the commenters on the Sexist very astutely suggested that perhaps the man had some sort of STI and was preventing transmission through use of a condom, thus allowing the woman to happily deliver a blow job.  Once I considered that, it lessened my dislike for this ad slightly, but overall it’s still highly problematic.

Ideally, if you’re going to have sex with someone, you would both be enjoying yourself.  If you’re about to make a “fatal error”, please, please, just masturbate instead.  Sometimes it’s just not worth it!

picture-9picture-29In this second ad, the woman is experiencing orgasm, but also her mind reads “paralyzed, confused”.  The man in the ad is primarily just experiencing muscle tension.  Again, not fun, not worth it.

For me the only argument that works to support these ads is this: if you’re going to have terrible sex that leaves you numb, confused, paralyzed, or tense, at least you can walk away without getting pregnant or contracting an STI. Kind of a depressing bright side if you ask me.

Engendering Peace for the New Year

The Buginese people of South Sulawesi have got it right. Talk about appreciating differences in people. In their culture they recognize five genders of people. Along with this, they believe that the holiest people transcend the binary of “man” and “woman.” I recently saw a short clip about the region on hulu.com’s “Taboo” series. Quite ironic name for the series considering the subject of understanding and genuinely embracing different people. I mean, come on, who get’s to decide what is “taboo.” Far as I’m concerned, being violent and hurtful to individuals/communities just because they look or live differently than you is taboo.

I hope for this year we start seeing the good in each other, breaking past the harmful definitions media can place on race and sexuality. Come on 2010, make me proud.

My magical sexy movieland journey

Last night I watched Shortbus by John Cameron Mitchell.  I had heard it was good, knew basically nothing else about it, and ended up absolutely loving it.  If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it.  There is a lot of graphic sex in this movie, which is the exciting part at first, but then the characters are all so engaging and compelling that all the full frontal nudity and auto-fellatio take a backseat and the story takes over.  My partner and I agreed that this movie was amazing at showing so much graphic sex but not feeling like porn, and also not even closely resembling cheesy sexually titillating Basic Instinct/Body of Evidence/Eyes Wide Shut kinds of movies.

So then I went to work today and I felt really sick and went right back home.  After taking a 4 hour nap, I decided to watch The Making of Shortbus–a weird thing for me to even do in the first place, because I usually don’t give a crap about special features.  I just liked this movie so much, I was really excited to learn more.  After viewing all the behind the scenes stuff, I decided that John Cameron Mitchell is amazing and my new boyfriend, so I logged into Netflix and watched Hedwig and the Angry Inch.  I hadn’t seen it in years, and I loved it even more this time than last.

Watching Hedwig got me super jazzed about over-the-top campy femininity and gender performance.  I was totally feeling the costumes, the wigs, and the sparkly make-up!  Being sick and on the couch, totally at peace with the idea of a lazy movie marathon that would carry me deep into the night, I decided to follow this fantastic film up with A Wink and a Smile, a documentary about burlesque, also conveniently available for instant viewing thanks to netflix.com.  I thought the movie was going to be lame, as are so many on-demand Netflix movies that let you see boobs.  I was wrong!  It was great!  It follows 10 women on their journey through a burlesque class.  You watch the women develop their characters, work on their moves, and most importantly tell you how their feelings about themselves change through this challenging and liberating process.  Makes me want to glue some feathers to my boobs and shake ‘em around.  Oh, also you get to see some routines done by professional and very talented burlesque performers.  Fun!

Next movie:  Indie Sex, a 4 part documentary about sex in movies.  So far I saw part one, which was about censorship.  I thought that sounded like the least interesting of the bunch, but I decided to begin at the beginning, as the movie makers intended.  I was greatly rewarded for my good decision making.  This was a super informative trip down dirty-movie memory lane, beginning with movies from as far back as movie cameras existed.  And guess who one of the commentators was?  My boyfriend!  John Cameron Mitchell!  How pleased was I when the censorship episode came to an end with discussion of how Shortbus has changed the way sex in American movies can exist and flourish in mainstream movie land?  Very pleased!  The next three parts are on teens, extremes, and taboos.  I hope they are as good as the first one was.

My sick day glued to the couch proved to be quite satisfying, in the end, and I would like to encourage you to all follow my sexy-gender-bending-boundary-exploring-history-learning movie journey.  If you rent Shortbus, the rest is available at your whim on Netflix.  And no, Netflix did not pay me to say that.  I pay them.

Now the night-time cold meds are kicking in, and I bid you a fond farewell.
