My first hand experience with a toxic toy

Before I started working at Smitten Kitten I worked as a peepshow model in a sex toy store and would spend my days putting on masturbation shows for paying customers. In addition to basic shows, the peepshow offered “toy shows.”  Customers could purchase toys in the store, and then pay an additional sixty dollars to see a peepshow model use the toy.

My encounter with a toxic toy happened during one of these toy shows. A regular bought me a new toy and requested one of these more expensive shows.  My lucky day!  Or so I thought.

I took the toy out of its packaging and proceeded to wash it.  It was a bright yellow “jelly” vibrator.  I went to start the show with my new toy… and right as the toy was inserted, my entire vaginal canal and vulva began burning. Within seconds it became so painful that I started screaming, ran out of the show, squatted down shaking and began to cry.  It was a terrifying, painful sensation.

For me, working in the peepshow was a positive experience.  But I wish there had been more awareness about the dangers of toxic sex toys.  I could have been spared a nasty experience.

Not all toxic toys cause such intense, immediate and painful reactions.  Some are made from porous, soft plastic that can harbor bacteria or seep plastic-softening chemicals like phthalates. Toxic toys can contribute to health problems over time… but they can also cause scary, dangerous experiences like mine.  To learn more about the dangers of toxic toys and about the body-friendly, safe toys sold at the Smitten Kitten, visit our website for the Coalition Against Toxic Toys.
